Property Tax Protection Through Local Government Limits

Taxpayers in Iowa have had enough of out-of-control property taxes, and they're looking for solutions.

Responsibility for property tax increases does not fall on the assessors but rather local government spending. In a recent ITR Foundation poll, conducted by Cygnal, Iowans were asked whether they supported or were opposed to the State Legislature setting limits on how much a local government can tax and spend. Over 56.1 percent of those polled support setting limits on what local governments can tax and spend with only 19.8 percent opposed.

Below, we break down poll responses by party, geography, and income.

Question: Local governments in Iowa have a broad authority to set property tax rates and budget levels as they deem appropriate. To control the growth of property taxes, do you support or oppose the State Legislature setting limits on how much a local government can tax and spend?
